We are heading to that time of the year now, when the woollies come out and the heavier drapes are put up. The evening brings in a chill with it and on some nights all you want to do is curl up with a cuppa all wrapped up in your quilt. This winter, why not do up your home in such a way that every room has a warm corner.

Changing the decor of your home to suit the winter  is not necessarily rocket science. A few additions and some changes in colour schemes can go a long way. Let’s begin with the colour scheme.

Popular colours are those that are associated with fire – red, orange, gold and of course, earthy tones such as browns, tans and the like. The four areas of the room that will need your attention are the ceiling, the floor, walls and the fabrics that you have.

For your sofas, if it’s time for a change in upholstery, go in for fabric-based ones instead of faux leather. This makes your seating arrangement all the more comfortable.

Also invest in a lot of throw rugs that can be moved all around the house. If you are looking at a new look in carpeting, then make sure you have something that goes under your sofas a bit. The same applies to the carpets you may have in the bedroom.

Make sure it goes under the bed, so that when you get your toes out of bed and onto the floor you are not jolted by the cold. Work on the lighting of your home. Turn down all the harsh lights or change them to dimmers. Another really good idea would be to take out your old woolies and create wraps for your lights.

This adds a really homely touch to them and prepares you to beat the cold. This same idea can be used for your vessels such as tea pots, casserole bowls and the like. You could even use this for your candle stands, your flower pots and the like. Give each room a look of its own.

Take out those candles

This is also a great time to bring out your collection of decorative and scented candles. Place them in as many nooks and corners as you can so that you can have a little shadow play going on in those corners. Bring out all the cushions you have.

Give them warm looking covers and place them all over your living space. It should easy enough for someone to pull a couple of them and make themselves comfortable at any point. The bedroom is one of the coziest places in the house and this is where a quilt or two and even some pillows can make a lot of difference.

Using double curtains – sheer ones on the windows and thicker ones on the outside which can be tied up would be a great way to cozy up the room.

Bringing in dim lights further enhances the look of the room. Doing up your home this winter can be very simple. Use these tips and a bit of your creativity to create an ambience that you would love to come home to every day.
