Student writes to VC on scarf ban

Mangalore, Aug 18, dhns:

Aysha Ashmin, who was denied entry into the classroom for wearing headscarf at Sri Venkatramana Swamy (SVS) College in Bantwal near here, has submitted a written complaint to Mangalore University Vice-Chancellor Professor K M Kaveriappa on Tuesday.

Ashmin, a first year BCom student of the college, stated that Principal Dr Seetharama Mayya has restricted her from  wearing headscarf according to Muslim faith. “I could not attend classes since August 7 and moreover, they (college authorities) did not allow me to write internal examination on August 17. Even though there is no restriction with regard to dressing, the principal did not allow me to enter the classroom wearing headscarf. Similarly, a senior student Bharath was also harassing me for wearing headscarf,” she explained. “Because of these, my education has come to a standstill now,” she pleaded.

Speaking to Deccan Herald, Mangalore University VC Prof  Kaveriappa said that the Varisty will send notice seeking a report from SVS College Principal through University registrar.
“We will prepare a report based on their reply and forward it to Commissioner of Collegiate Education. We cannot take action against the college on our own,” Kaveriappa said.
