Officials asked to ready projects on purifying water

He was addressing the officials at a review meeting on the drought situations at his office here. He told the officials to prepare the blueprint for the project which includes supplying water from Hospet to the district. He announced this decision after the officials brought to his notice that the water was supplied from Hospet through wagons 10 years ago.

The officials on this occasion were also told to prepare projects on purifying water which was contaminated with chemicals in 944 villages and grants required to provide fodder for nearly  four lakh livestock in the district.

The deputy Director of Animal Husbandry pointed out that there is enough stock of fodder for the next four months. He said, probably two goshalas in each taluk may have to be opened later to ensure proper distribution of fodder.

Less rain
The district this year has received less than 50 per cent rain and till the end of August ragi crop can be sowed. While ragi should have been sowed in 95,485 hectares while the sowing is carried out in only 27,000 hectares.

A loss of nearly 80 per cent of ground nut crop has been reported and the district may get only 75 per cent of ragi crop, said Chikkanna, the Joint Director of Agriculture Department.

Tahsildar said in the meeting that water is being supplied through tanker to 11 villages in Srinivaspur taluk, 13 villages in Bangarpet taluk, two villages in Kolar taluk, 10 villages in Mulbagal taluk and 14 villages in Malur taluk.

Zilla Panchayat deputy secretary Laxminarayan said the zilla panchayat has identified 53 villages facing crisis and Rs 14 crore worth project has been mooted to dig borewells in these villages.

Under the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme Rs 23 crore has been spent from April 1, 2009 and the department has aimed at spending Rs 100 crore.
Nearly 3,302 families have completed 100 days and 56,865 family members have applied for the job under the NREGS. Till this day 23,66,790 man days have been created, said the deputy secretary.

As many as 604 borewells were dug since April 1, 2009 and 30 per cent of them are functioning successfully.

Water shortage
There is shortage of water for the last three to four months in some of the borewells which had sufficient water in the beginning, said Devaraj, Executive Engineer, the technical division, Panchayat Raj.

In Kolar City Municipality area, there are 251 borewells and 210 are functioning. Water is being supplied through private tankers to 23 wards, said Commissioner.

In Malur eight wards are being supplied water through tankers, said tahsildar Mangala. Other places where water is supplied through tankers are Bangarpet, Mulbagal, Kolar Gold Fields and Srinivaspur, she said.

Assistant Commissioner Peddappayya and other district-level officials attended the meeting.
