Govt agrees to amend NIT Act

New Delhi, Aug 20:

The government on Thursday approved a proposal to amend the National Institute of Technology (NIT) Act, 2007 to declare the NITs as institutes of national importance.

A meeting of the Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh approved the proposal to amend the Act to bring the Indian Institutes of Science Education and Research under the legislation. Minister for Information and Broadcasting Ambika Soni said the amendment was intended to strengthen existing transitional provisions of the Act and to give representation to nearby premier central institutions in the board of governors.

Soni said the amendment would change the procedure for appointment of the Deputy Directors in the NITs. “The proposed amendments aim at fostering improvements in the existing set-up, establishment of proper and effective management structures in the technical institutions and providing an environment to encourage innovative ideas,” she added. The Bill to amend the Act will be introduced in the next session.
