H1N1's fatal run on, 4 die in Bangalore

A 36-year-old woman, Ratna, died at Bangalore Baptist Hospital on Thursday, while it turned out that a 45-year old woman, who died at Columbia Asia Hospital late on the night  of August 17, was a victim of the contagion. So was 28-year-old Prema, who died at Vydehi Hospital on August 16.

The fourth victim of the day, Lakshmi (26) of Ashwathanagar, was declared dead at the Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Chest Diseases (RGICD) at 7.30 pm. Her swab samples, sent to the Nimhans Lab, had tested positive on Monday.

Ratna, a resident of Ganganagar, was admitted to Baptist Hospital on August 18. She had complained of fever and breathlessness.  Ratna was put on ventilator in the ICU, her throat swabs were taken and Tamiflu was administered. She, however, died on Thursday morning and results of the test samples, which turned out to be H1N1 positive, arrived in the evening.

The second victim, Prema, a resident of Hoskote, was admitted to Vydehi Hospital on August 15 due to fever and breathlessness. She was put on ventilator and Tamiflu was also administered. However, she succumbed on August 16 due to acute respiratory distress syndrome. Vydehi Hospital Medicine department head Dr Somashekhar said Prema was admitted after she wracked with fever for five days and could not be saved due to late admission.

A 45-year-old woman succumbed to the flu at Columbia Asia Referral Hospital, Yeshwantpur, late on August 17. The woman, a resident of AD Halli, had cough, fever and cold for three days before she was admitted to hospital on August 15. Her test results came two days after she died, on August 19 .

Countrywide deaths 45

In the highest number of casualties reported in a day, 11 people died of H1N1 flu on Thursday, taking the countrywide toll to 45, as the deadly virus claimed its first victims in Delhi. The day also saw a spurt in fresh positive cases — 159 — across the country taking the total to 2,401.
