Beggar menace on the rise
Nuisance increasing at prominent tourist spots including Madikeri
Madikeri is popularly called as ‘Switzerland of India’ and is one of most sought after tourist destinations in Indian map.
The number of visitors visiting the city is on the rise. Similarly, the nuisance created by beggars is also on the rise, particularly at prominent tourist spots.
The beggars target the tourist and beg in front of them. As soon as the tourists get out of the vehicle, the beggars start pleading with them through various tactics. Some times they even demand for money.
The tourists who come from outside the district normally give money without opposing them.
With the tourists visiting the district, employment has been generated in the district. The resort owners, lodge owners sellers of black pepper and honey have made huge profit. The tourism has indirectly helped in the development of the city. As the tourists who visit Madikeri on rise during weekends, the number of beggars are also on rise.
“With the nuisance created by the beggars, many tourists have returned back to their native without enjoying their trip fully. There are also compulsive beggars, who engage in beggary as a habit though they have enough funds to meet their expenses,” says locals. The rise in number of beggars in the town is a unhealthy development and the authorities should initiate action against them.
“The beggars from outside the district and State are also engaged in beggary in Madikeri for the last two to three years. There is a need to identify the outsiders and send them back to their native,” feel locals.
The CMC has been collecting tax from the citizens.
The CMC should utilise the funds for the welfare of those beggars who are disabled and aged.
It should initiate action against beggars who can work for their livelihood.
