Stop sand mining, save Uttara Pinakini: Farmers
Members of the Karnataka Rajya Raitha Sangha and the Hasiru Sene staged protest in the town demanding the Government to save River Uttara Pinakini and to stop sand mining.
The members staged dharna in front of the taluk office on Friday. Water Expert K Narayanaswamy said that more than 75 per cent of the sand in the river bed is transported to Bangalore for construction. The lorry owners and others are pressurising the taluk administration to give permission to mine even in the remaining 25 per cent of the river bed.
Politicians, officers, industrialists and others are equally hand in glove in the mining, he added.
Raitha Sangha president Lakshminarayan said that at no cost should district administration give permission for sand mining or transportation. “Emphasis should be given to protection of the river and administration should take steps to maintain good environment,” he added.
Farmers’ leaders Venkata Reddy, Lakshminarayana Reddy, B H Narasimhaiah, Bhaktarahalli Byregowda, Lokesh Gowda, workers Anand, Muddarangaiah, Ravi Nayak and others were present on the occasion.
