Survey on newspaper hawkers
After the Mumbai Dabbawallas whose work culture and business acumen caught the attention of researchers and marketing professionals, newspaper hawkers in the City have become the subject of study.
As part of their project, students of MBA at Gupta College of Management and Technology studied the system employed by hawkers to distribute newspapers and the various stages involved in the process.
According to Indira Gupta, President of Gupta Education Trust (GET), most workers in the newspaper distribution system are aged between 12 and 50 and work mainly as part-timers. He said that the survey conducted by students in Bangalore and Hindupur in Andhra Pradesh was a novel project in the marketing stream.
As many as seven lakh people work in the distribution of newspapers across the country and their number stands at 7,600 in Bangalore, the survey found.
