Professor arrested for misbehaving with student
A visiting professor at the English and Foreign Languages University (EFLU) at Tarnaka here was today arrested for allegedly misbehaving with a PhD student of the varsity, police said.
Rajat Kumar Mohanty, a native of Cuttack and a guest faculty teaching Linguistics and Phonetics subject at EFLU, was taken into custody after a girl student lodged a complaint accusing him of misbehaving with her after calling her into his room at the guest house located on the varsity campus, they said.
Mohanty who had previously pursued his PhD course from EFLU was now staying in Bangalore and was conducting two classes every week at the EFLU, a police officer said.
"Yesterday he came from Bangalore to Hyderabad as part of his weekly classes and called up the girl student to his room on the pretext of having a discussion on the subject. The girl went to his room but Rajat started misbehaving with her.
"When she objected to this he initially apologized but again misbehaved with her after which the girl came out of the room and informed the matter to her father," an investigating officer said quoting the complainant.
Following the complaint, Osmania University Police registered a case under Section 354 of IPC (outraging the modesty of a woman) against Rajat and took him into custody, the police officer said. Further investigations are underway.
