Bangalore turns Cinema Paradiso as BIFFES begins
It’s back. Bigger, better and bountiful. It promises cinephiles lifetime cinematic experience during the week of its run. The much awaited Bangalore International Film Festival — BIFFES 2011, in its fourth avataar, is set to wow avowed cineastes with a bouquet of over 175 films from 40 countries.
This time, BIFFES has so scheduled its screenings that film buffs will not miss any festival favourites as second, and third screenings have been slotted from among creme la creme of cinema. Indeed, what better way to sign off 2011 and hail 2012 than bingeing in on choicest of cinemas as they light up screens at Fame Lido on MG Road, Central Inox in JP Nagar, Rejoyz in Malleswaram, Priyadarshini Auditorium at Badami House, Suchitra Film Society at Banashankari II Stage, and Vartha Soudha Auditorium on Infantry Road.
BIFFES promises a veritable film fiesta with critically acclaimed movies from global marquee slated under competition sections — International, Asian, Indian Cinema (Chitrabharati) and Kannada Cinema, besides Cinema of the World, Country Focuses on Poland and Egypt, Retrospective of Hsiao Hsien Hou, Theo Angelopoulos, Michael Cacoyannis, Dariush Mehrjui, including Malayalam cinema mastero
G Aravindan and Kannada cinema’s mercurial Puttanna Kanagal’s works. Other features include Political Cinema, Fipresci, Netpac winners, besides nostalgia-vintage classics and master classes.
True to its tagline — Panorama of World Cinema, BIFFES, where cinema knows no boundaries, rightfully kicks off with South African Movie Lucky which has Karnataka’s very own celebrated actress
B Jayashree providing power-packed performance which fetched her the coveted best actress award at Abu Dhabi International Film Festival.
The festival, says Artistic Director H N Narahari Rao, presents an even balance between classics and contemporaries, national and international, the very good and the best which the diaspora can gorge upon.
The festival, on from December 15 to 22, 2011, at aforementioned venues, promises mega happy viewing session for all awed by the tantalising tales they tell.
