Palike gets 2-yr relief from JnNURM
The Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), which is largely dependent on the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JnNURM), for the remodelling of four valleys in the City, got some breather with Centre agreeing to extend the project till March 2014.
Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission is a massive city modernisation scheme launched by the Union government. The duration of the project, which is dedicated to the development of Indian cities, is for a period of six years, extending from December 2005-06 till the end of 2011.
Addressing mediapersons on Wednesday, BBMP Commissioner Shankarlinge Gowda said so far only 40 per cent of work relating to the remodelling of stormwater drains is complete.
However, the completion of the entire project will take another two years.
The Palike will asphalt the pothole-ridden road that passes through the Bangalore University campus, provided the general public are allowed to use it, the Palike commissioner said.
Despite the Vice-Chancellor of Bangalore University N Prabhu Dev stating that the road was not meant for public use, the Palike has prepared a plan to repair the road with its funds, he said.
On the Central government’s award to the Palike for financial sustainability, Shankarlinge Gowda said the Palike was feted for utilising information technology, such as, Geographical Information System (GIS) for resource mobilisation. The award consists a cash prize of Rs three lakh, he added.
More emphasis will be laid on short-term projects, as they would address the immediate needs of the public, Shankarlinge Gowda said.
