Jeev opens with modest 71
Jeev Milkha Singh on Thursday opened with a modest 71 on his 40th birthday even as Lee Westwood of England flirted with history on the opening day of the inaugural Thailand Golf Championships here.
Westwood, who at one stage looked sure to touch the magical 50s, lit up the tournament with a stunning 12-under 60 at the picturesque Amata Spring Country Club to grab the lead.
The 38-year-old English golfer was five clear of John Daly (65), whose five birdies included one on the Island Green on the 17th besides an eagle on 11th.
Jeev was placed at 27th while playing with Sergio Garcia (76) and Shingo Katayama (77), but the best Indian on view on the day was Gaganjeet Bhullar (70) in the 16th spot. Rahil Gangjee (72) was lying 41st. Jyoti Randhawa (73) and Kunal Bhasin (73) were tied 58th, while SSP Chowrasia and Shiv Kapur (74) were 73rd.
Digvijay Singh (75) in 83rd and Himmat Rai (77) was at the 110th spot. Chiragh Kumar (78) celebrating his 28th birthday would hardly have been happy with 117th placing that will probably see him finish the event before the weekend.
