Cold wave grips parts of UP, HP
Cold condition prevailed at many places in Uttar Pradesh as mercury dipped below normal, affecting normal life.
According to the MeT office, night temperatures fell markedly in Meerut division. The temperature was below normal in Meerut, Kanpur, Lucknow and Jhansi divisions.
Muzaffarnagar, which recorded a night temperature of 0.8 deg C, was the coldest place in the state. The MeT office said weather would remain mainly dry and fog would occur at a few places in the state.
Lucknow district magistrate Anil Sagar has directed that schools up to intermediate level would start from 9 am. The step has been taken keeping in mind the difficulties faced by students in the winter season.
Intense cold wave, sweeping most parts of Himachal Pradesh, has further tightened its grip as minimum temperatures dipped down nearly to freezing point in several places in the state.
Thick ground frost was seen at many places and towns along the banks of Ravi, Beas and Sutlej rivers were wrapped by dense fog in the morning hours, hampering normal traffic. Nahan was the warmest with a low of 6.7 degree C, three points below normal.
Keylong in Lahaul and Spiti district recorded minimum minus five degree C, while it was minus 1.2 degree C in Kalpa at Kinnaur.
