Moonlight music, a different experience
The JSS Sangeetha Sabha organises Moonlight music on every full moon day at the picturesque ambience of JSS mutt. All kinds of music, classical, devotional, light, fusion, instrumental have been performed here.
The inmates of the mutt and regular music lovers listen to all without any discrimination. Enjoying music in this surrounding is altogether a different experience. Recently M S Sheela sang here for a packed audience.
She was supported by Mathur Shreenidhi on the violin , Anoor Ananthakrishna Sharma on the mridanga and Tumkur B Shashishankar on the ghata respectively.
Sheela is one of our most versatile artistes who has carved a niche for herself in both classical and light music. She has won many accolades for her talent.
A rich voice that transforms her musical thoughts that has a strong back up of good tutelage helps her in making every concert a success. It is the melody that catches one’s attention instantaneously in her singing. A clear diction and classism combine together to bring the perfect bhava. The Kruthis shine brightly in her rendering adding more meaning to it. She pleased all kinds of listeners by selecting appropriate compositions.
She maintained a lively tempo right from the opening Navaragamalika Varna valachi vachchi to the last piece. It never shifted from the main momentum. ‘Shri Shankaraguruvaram’ (Nagaswaravali-Rupaka-Maha Vaidyanathayyar) was sparkling with appropriate raga and kalpana swaras. A keerthana of Tyagaraja in which he expresses that he is perturbed by Lord’s ‘Ora chupu’ the indirect sneering glance at him! ‘Ora chupu juchethi nyayama?’ in Kannadagowla was a fine presentation. A rare composition of Sarpabhushana Shivayogi ‘Palisayya Parvatheeshwara’ in Kamavardhini was a scholarly rendering.
The sprightly kalpana swaras matched the mood of the composition. The raga improvisation in every phrase brought out its essence very naturally.
After another composition of Tyagaraja in the raga Chinthamani ‘Naada thanumanisham’ and Ponnayya Pille’s ‘Mahadeva manohari’ in Devamanohari, Sheela opted to present Mohana in a detailed exposition.
Emphasising on the rasa, she and Mathur Shreenidhi were competing to give their best. ‘Bhavanutha’ again maintaining the lively pace was enjoyable. The various combination of swaras she produced keeping the simple scale of mohana as base marked her scholarship.
The short tani between Anoor Ananthakrishna Sharma and Shashishankar was also good. Sheela reserved the rest of the concert for Vachanas and Devaranamas. The emotion packed ‘Chakorange chandramana’ (Basavanna), ‘Thoredu jeeAvisabahude’ (Kanakadasa), ‘Nambaru nechcharu’ (Basavanna) and a Tillana in Brindavanasaranga added pep to the fine concert.
Anniversary
Swarasankula, the Hindustani School of Music celebrated its 9th anniversary on December 11 at Vasudevacharya Bhavana. Malashree Kanavi presented a vocal concert along with Sriram Bhat (harmonium) and Ramesh Dhannur (tabla). Malashree is a young and upcoming singer with a rich voice.
She is capable of performing both classical and light music. She presented two main ragas Yaman and Binshadj or Kaunsidhwani. She has the potentials but need more experience to go deep in to the raga. Malashree did try to bring the nuances of Yaman and binshadj. The Khyal ‘Man tu gaare Harinaam’ in vilambit teen tal and ‘Avo more mandirava piyarva’ in Dhruth teen tal sounded good. ‘Barasaana laage badariya’ needed more refinement. The light numbers she sang like ‘Nambide ninna naada devatheye’, ‘Yaaru olidarenu?’ ‘Hey gora madhuraanana’ and ‘chakorange’ got her loud applause.
