Muduvatti, with a polulation of 1937, most of the houses here have tap water connection. But water has not been supplied till date.

Residents are dependent on two borewells at a distance, from which water is supplied through pipeline, which people have to collect in the main road. Sometimes, they are forced to spend nights on the road, hoping to get enough water for
the day.

Dilapidated

Among the water supply channels, one tank is in dilapidated condition and borewell does not have enough water to be supplied to the village.

This has led to ‘survival of the fittest’ situation in the village, where the residents are frequesntly seen fighting for the water.  As only the residents who make it to the pipeline early can  be ensured of water and others have to manage without water for the day.

Power cut

Adding to the woes, the village has power supply for only three to four hours a day. Water is being supplied for two hours when there is three phase power supply in the night and from morning 10.30 to  2pm.

The residents said except for the farm owners who have borewells in their premises do not face water scarcity. But they alleged that people whi own borewells refuse to give water to the residents.

“A member from the family has to wait in the queue from early morning. But still there are days when we had to come back without water,” said a daily wage worker Subbanna.

The time to supply water is not fixed. So we have to be on the watch till we get water. Even if we have bath once in three days, still we do not have enough water,” said Usharani of the village.

“We cannot afford to buy water from the tank. So we even fight among ourselves and collect water” lamented Doreswamy.

Munivenkatamma, a residents said that “ We are forced to wait for the water outside, leaving the elderly and ill at home. We cannot attend to them.”

Response from GP

But the Gram Panchayat Development Officer, Savitha refutes these charges. “Water is not being supplied through the taps to homes because of lack of unanimity among the residents in this matter. So, we have arranged afor a common point where everybody has to collect water”, she said.

She also told, the residents might be fearing that if water is supplied through taps, only some houses may get water and many will have to still struggle for it.
