Govt not to hike water tariff
There is no proposal before the government to hike water tariff in urban local bodies, said Municipal Administration Minister Balachandra Jarkiholi.
Addressing reporters here on Tuesday, he clarified that this proposal may have been discussed at the official level, but the government had no such plans. He said that his priority was to ensure proper supply of water.
“I want to address the water supply problem first. Once that is done, the government will do a rethink on tariff hike,” he said. Jarkiholi said the government is planning public private partnership for effective disposal of garbage in local bodies through public-private partnership.
The matter will be furthered after discussions with the chief minister. He said that four to five acres of land would be purchased in each of the municipalities and town panchayats for handling and disposal of garbage. The government is exploring the possibility of producing energy from garbage by involving private parties. A technical wing will be set up in the department to provide basic infrastructure speedily.
