Christmas and shopping lists go together. With the festival round the corner, Indian families get busy picking up the best produce in the market, and all this in an effort to whip up the best meal for the big day.
Metrolife peeps inside the kitchens of some of these Delhiites to sample what’s cooking!
Dr Dariel Matoor, a resident of Golf Links throws open-house parties every year for friends and family members.
This Christmas Dariel unveils two of his special dishes--traditional roast turkey with cranberry sauce and honey glazed leg of ham with pineapple garnish.
To go along with it, there will be roast potatoes, spinach and a variety of fish. Dariel says, “This is our special menu for Christmas. Along with it, there will be dishes from other cuisines such as Chinese and Italian.” The special fruit punch that she creates with old wine, apple and other fruits, is another hit among her daughter’s friends.
Esttele Desai, from Chattarpur, is also known for throwing open lavish Christmas lunches. The enthusiastic Goan says, “I will settle for a Turkey this time because it is difficult to find a duck or goose. I have started baking cookies and have also started preparing ‘vindaloo,’ for the big Christmas lunch.”
When it comes to traditional choice for cooking, Brenda Khanna adds to the list with roast chicken, mashed potatoes and sauté vegetables. This play school principal has already begun her preparations with rose cookies being stocked up.
This resident of Gurgaon says, “Me and my daughter-in-law have started making kalkal and rose cookies.” When asked about her ingredients for cooking traditional kalkal, she says, “Maida, egg, sugar, vanilla essence and coconut milk go into the making of these rolled cookies.”
Saumya Ann Cyriac, a student, is looking forward to the traditional Malyali dishes that her mother cooks for Christmas. She says, “My mother cooks chicken curry, fish fry and fried rice to go along with these. For sweet dish we get plum cake from the bakery.”
Then there is Kshipra Simon, a young photographer from Dehradun who’s not left any stone unturned to treat authentic food to her friends and carol singers. Kshipra says, “I have finished baking one pile of rum cakes and star-shaped cookies and now will start with Santa-shaped cookies. My friends wait all through the year especially for the rum cake, which is made of dry fruits soaked in rum for at lest six months.”
