Mayor flays Centre for double standards
MHA has different standards on division of MCD and UP, says Abbi
Delhi Mayor Rajni Abbi on Thursday came down heavily on the Union government, especially the Union Home Ministry, for double standards on trifurcation issue of Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD).
Abbi said the home ministry was behaving in different manner while dealing with similar issues of division of MCD and Uttar Pradesh.
“The political and administrative contours of the proposed four states out of unified Uttar Pradesh are in stark contrast with the matter regarding the trifurcation of MCD. The question of finances and funds as asked from the UP government finds no mention in the case of trifurcation of MCD. The Delhi government is far from such queries from the Union government,” alleged Abbi.
A contrast
In contrast to the UP issue, the Mayor said: “The Union Home Ministry never tried to know as to how the existing departments will be divided among the three proposed corporations of North, South and East Delhi. The question also remains on how the three proposed corporations would share the tax collections/revenue and even the debt burden.”
She said the increase in financial burden and the means to increase the revenue were a few questions that needed to be settled before arriving at any decision on the issue.
“The increase in staff for equal distribution among the three corporations will lead to increase in burden on public exchequer. Besides, the setting up of headquarters for three corporations would also lead to three-fold rise in expenditure. This is because the expenditure for one headquarters of the MCD would get multiplied three times with the coming up of three headquarters of three civic bodies,” said Abbi.
The Central government did not even bother to ask the Delhi government on what political and administrative grounds it forwarded the proposal of MCD trifurcation to it.
The Mayor alleged such double standards only show the mentality of the Congress.
