Plastic ban forgotten as initial zeal wears off
March 15, 2011 was the deadline to stop the use of polythene carry bags less than 40 microns in thickness. But nine months down the line, the ban is far from being implemented in all seriousness.
BBMP technical staff were to inspect shops and impose fines on violators.
A group of 50 activists of NKS Kutumba organised an awareness rally on the plastic ban in Lalbagh on Sunday.
Narendra Kumar, president of the group, says the Palike responded positively, initially. It conducted regular raids, following which, NKS Kutumba members stopped their rallies.
“Now, we found that officials have stopped inspecting the shops. The vendors too do not remember the rule. Therefore, we resumed the rallies,” Kumar said.
When asked if Karnataka State Pollution Control Board (KSPCB) is conducting regular inspections to ensure effective implementation of the ban, an official said: “It is not the duty of KSPCB any more, but that of BBMP.”
