BWSSB to resubmit tariff hike proposal
The BWSSB will resubmit a proposal seeking hike in the water charges, said chairperson P B Ramamurthy.
He told reporters that the water charges had not been increased since 2005 as a result of which the Board had been incurring heavy losses.
When the proposal was submitted earlier, the government had suggested that the Board take steps to plug the pilferage of water from the supply lines.
Ramamurthy said that 37 per cent of Cauvery water being supplied to the City from a distance of 100 km was being wasted and the Board had come up with a new plan to prevent the loss.
The plan was being implemented on a pilot basis in the southern parts of the City. The water connections in each ward of the southern part were being considered as ‘distinct meter area’ so as to be able to assess the quantity of water being consumed. New pipelines would be laid for a length of 142 km. The project was being undertaken at a cost of Rs 175 crore with assistance from Japan International Co-operative Agency.
