Bangalore University decides against single valuation
There seems to be no respite for students of postgraduate courses in Bangalore University (BU), who wait for months for their examination results. The varsity has decided against introducing single valuation for PG answer scripts.
The Academic Council of the University which met here on Tuesday rejected the proposal to adopt the single valuation system for all the semesters of PG courses citing difficulty in getting external evaluators and dependence on internal ones may result in erratic evaluation.
A proposal submitted at a meeting of the University officials and teachers on September 24, 2011 sought to discard the existing system of double valuation in which each paper is valued by two valuers — one internal and the other external whose name is approved by the Board of Studies (BoS) and the Syndicate.
The result assigned is the average of the two valuation marks, but the Registrar (Evaluation) can get both valuations done by external valuators. If there is a difference of 20 marks between the two valuations, the answer script is valued by a third examiner.
But following the practice causes inordinate delay in declaration of results. So much so that results of many an examination conducted in August have not been declared yet, affecting the job prospects of the students.
The university wanted to introduce the single valuation system for faster results, which required an amendment to the BU Examination Ordinance, 2011. Karnatak University, Dharwad, and Karnataka State Open University (KSOU), Mysore, have already adopted the single valuation system, and the University of Mysore is about to do so.
BU, too, wanted to do the same, and involve preferably external examiners only. But many members opined that getting external examiners would be very difficult. And relying only on internal examiners would be dangerous. Hence, the university decided to reject the proposal.
At present, the university declares the results of undergraduate examinations within a month, thanks to the recent reforms. The PG students, however, are not so lucky. Shoaib Ahmad, a student of Al-Ameen Institute of Information Sciences, says he will write the examination of MCA 3rd semester next week but the result of his previous semester examination held in August were not yet out.
