NO CELEBRATION: Some people are busy working
If New Year is about dreams and dares, it’s also about disappointments! On one hand, there are those sitting pretty to welcome the New Year, and on the other, there are those who’ll not be as lucky.
Metrolife talks to the “less fortunate” ones, for whom New Year will be like any other ordinary day.
“We will be celebrating our New Year in the office as we all have a day shift. Although, we will be given extra bonus for working on the New Year, we will also miss our family, friends and other celebrations,” says Rajender Prasad, shift manager trainee in Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC). Same is the story of Deepankar Das, who is a shift manager here. “We have to make compromises as we have no option. We are in the hospitality business and we are here to make others happy on their day off,” says Deepankar.
And those in the hospitality sector are certainly feeling the pinch. “It feels awkward to come and work on the New Year but I will have to come. It feels bad when I see others partying and enjoying their day with friends,” rues Hanuman Jaiswal, one of the crew members of McDonald’s. Another member Rajnikanth Sharma also adds, “We also feel like celebrating but we can’t. We will have to come here and do our assigned duties.”
The “no celebration” mode doesn’t stop here. Auto drivers are also the ones to suffer and cannot be with their families. “We also feel like taking leaves and have a relaxing day but we can’t. We can’t even take an off as we have to pay daily wages to the owner of the autos and if we take any leave then we will have to pay it from our own pockets,” complains Upender Kumar, an auto driver.
If autowallahs are crying hoarse, so are the parking attendants. The irony is that these attendants show car owners the way to park their swanky cars before they step into a happening do and guard the vehicle till the celebration is over. “Our work is such that we can’t take an off. We will get the daily wages if we don’t take an off. It’s all for the money,” says a sad Ghansham Shukla, parking attendant. And these woes continue, New Year or no New Year!
