Udupi soldier dies in Meerut fighting dacoits
A soldier hailing from Uddinahithlu in Thenkanidiyur of Malpe was killed at Meerut near Haziabad in Uttar Pradesh on Thursday.
Upendra Kumar was working in 22 Infrantry signal regiment. The news of his death reached his home on Thursday. However, the death is shrouded in mystery.
Someone from the military office had called his family members on Thursday morning from his mobilephone asking them to rush to Meerut as he is suffering from fever.
However, when the relatives called him in the afternoon, they were informed that he was killed in exchange of fire between the dacoits and the force. However, when the relatives called in the night, the officials said that Upendra Kumar had committed suicide and wanted to know whether he had any affair?
However, later when the family members called the official, they were informed that it was not suicide but was killed by the dacoits and his body was thrown beside the track.
Upendra Kumar had lost his parents as a child and was taken care by his uncle. After completing SSLC, he pursued PUC in Poornaprajna PU Evening College while working in a private company.
After joining the Army, he had worked in Kashmir for two years and later, he was posted in Madhya Pradesh.
He had come to his native, Udupi, during Deepavali, said his neighbour Vijaya Suvarna. He is survived by his two elder brothers and one younger brother.
The officials had told the family that the body will be sent to Mumbai for post mortem and will arrive at Mangalore airport on Saturday morning.
“We have already informed Deputy Commissioner who in turn has promised to send an ambulance to get the body,” said Suvarna.
