‘Stop migration of farmers to cities’
Sammelana sheds light on need to save Kannada
Dr Shivaram Karanth Vedike (Ammathi): Sahithya Sammelanas work towards the development and growth of Kannada language, said Assembly Speaker K G Bopaiah.
Speaking at the fourth Virajpet taluk Kannada Sahitya Sammelana at Ammathi Kodava Samaja, he said Kannada language should be strengthened at the villages.
“With the failure of crops, the villagers are migrating to cities. There is a need to check the migration of agriculturists,” he said.
Though many feel that Kannada medium schools should not be closed, the government rule has fixed minimum number of students for a particular school. When the schools are not able to get even minimum number of students what the government can do? he asked.
Though English knowledge is essential to face the competitive world, one should make use of mother tongue as well.
The Sammelan President Kodeera Lokesh Monnappa said that Kannada is vibrant and alive in Kodagu. Inspite of languages like Kodava, Tulu and Konkani existing as mother tongue in the region, people in Kodagu are striving to protect Kannada by speaking in Kannada.
“Kannada language was introduced to the district during the rule of the kings. The literatures, which were produced against the British were written in Kannada,” he added.
With the government constituting Kodava Academy, installing Guddemane Appayya Gowda statue, it has proved that there was close relation between Kannada and Kodava.
