Nigerian held with cocaine worth over Rs 1.75 crore
A 32-year-old Nigerian national was arrested from Janakpuri on charges of drug-trafficking on New Year’s eve, police said on Sunday.
The police recovered 175 gm of cocaine worth over Rs 1.75 crore in the international market from the accused Paul Chinedu Ugwor. Ugwor is from Onitsha, a market town in Nigeria, and has been staying in Uttar Nagar.
“He was nabbed after we laid a trap, following a tip-off that a person involved in drug-trafficking may come to Shivaji Marg in Janakpuri to deliver cocaine to one of his contacts,” said P S Kushwah, additional deputy commissioner of police (crime).
The cocaine was meant to be delivered to high-profile clients celebrating New Year’s eve at hotels across Delhi. During interrogation, Ugwor told the police that he came to India in 2008 on a multiple entry visa.
He lived in Mumbai for some time and set up a textile export business. But the business did not work out as he had intended, after which he decided to enter the world of drug-trafficking to make some easy money.
“In Mumbai, Ugwor came in contact with another Nigerian involved in supplying cocaine to pubs and bars. As his business was not doing well, he started supplying cocaine in Mumbai with his associate Dabel Chukwu,” Kushwah said.
Ugwor shifted to Delhi last year. He used to smuggle drugs into the Capital by train. He often concealed the cargo carefully.
“Then he made some new contacts in Delhi and started supplying cocaine to high-profile clients and rave party-goers in the National Capital Region,” Kushwah added.
The 175 gm of cocaine recovered from Ugwor is one of the biggest recoveries in recent times by the Delhi police.
“We have registered a case against Ugwor. Investigation is on,” said Kushwah.
