CCTVs to keep an eye on medical PGCET
Entire process of examination to be videographed, says Ramdas
The Medical Education Department has finally woken up to prevent examination malpractices.
It has now decided to closely monitor this year's PGCET for admissions to the medical courses scheduled for January 29. Addressing reporters on Monday, Medical Education Minister S A Ramdas said closed circuit TVs will be installed in the examination centres, and the entire process of examination will be videographed. Students will not be allowed to carry their mobile phones to the examination centres, he added.
The department will take the bio metric details of all students appearing for the examination so that they can be easily identified at the time of counselling. Besides, it will help identify proxy students.
Unlike last year when the PGCET was held in 11 different centres across the State, this year's examination will be held only in Bangalore, he added. The department was rocked by a major scam in conducting PGCET examination at Vijayanagar Institute of Medical Sciences last year. The CID, which has been investigating the scam, recently filed a chargesheet in a Bellary court against 25 persons, including 11 medical staff of the Institute, in this regard.
This apart, Ramdas said the department will initiate the process of setting up the proposed para-medical and nursing university in Bangalore after obtaining approval from the State cabinet.
Report submitted
A high-level committee headed by Dr Devi Shetty set up to look into the possibility of setting up the university, recently submitted its report to the department. The committee has recommended that the university should be set up in Bangalore. A team of officials has been asked to study the report.
By setting up the university, the department wants to regulate para-medical and nursing colleges across the State, he added. On the allegation that the newly-appointed Director of Dharwad Institute of Mental Health and Neuro Sciences Dr Vinod Kulkarni had produced false certificates, the Minister said the appointment was made after thoroughly verifying all the documents.
He also said a Bangalore-based non-government organisation called Forum of Justice had sent him a fax message alleging that he had taken Rs 1.5 crore bribe from Dr Vijay Kumar, who was appointed as the Director of Kidwai Institute of Oncology recently. Ramdas said he will take appropriate legal action against the NGO for making false allegations.
