‘KSRTC drivers must be responsible’
India tops the list of countries in which people have died due to road mishaps, says WHO
“KSRTC drivers are under stress due to various professional and personal reasons. But they should manage them and discharge their duty with full dedication in the interest of the people, said additional deputy commissioner Dr Gopalakrishna.
Speaking at a function organised as part of the road safety week by KSRTC here recently, he said people always blame drivers for road accidents but one should understand that drivers do not relax for even a second while driving unlike other professions, where they can take breaks. However, drivers should be aware of their responsibility. They should forget all issues before reporting to work.
Additional superintendent of police Kittali, who inaugurated the function, said even people should develop awareness about traffic rules and road safety.
At least 60 cases are being reported against KSRTC drivers every year, but not in all cases the fault is that of KSRTC drivers. Even drivers and riders of other vehicles commit mistakes. So everybody should be careful.
Assistant director for information Ramegowda said accidents are another form of terrorism. More people become victims of accidents than terrorism.
Negligence
Accidents are a result of negligence and ego on the part of drivers most of the times. So drivers should introspect and transform. They should understand the pain and sufferings of accident victims and their families.
Over 1.90 lakh people have been killed in accidents in 2011. The number of accident victims is continously on the rise for the past three years.
According to statistics compiled by the World Health Organisation, India tops the list of countries in which people have died due to road accidents, said divisional controller of KSRTC N K Basavaraju.
KSRTC driver Ningegowda, who has recently won chief minister’s gold medal for accident-free driving for 20 years, was felicitated on the occasion. Municipality commissioner Nagabushan, HUDA commissioner Chandrasekhar, PWD executive engineer Ramachandra and RTO M N Gopalakrishna were present.
