Metro Phase II to have 4 extensions
The State Cabinet on Tuesday cleared Phase II of the Namma Metro project, which will have four extensions and two new lines running across 72.1 km. The project will now have to get the approval of the Centre.
Briefing reporters after the Cabinet meeting here, Higher Education Minister V S Acharya said “the detailed project report (DPR) estimates the cost at Rs 27,000 crore.” The project would be completed by 2017.
Under Phase II, Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) intends to extend the reach of routes under Phase I. “They want to extend the routes up to the periphery of the City,” sources said.
The DPR recommends that the network on the East-West Corridor of Phase I could be extended up to Whitefield from the existing terminating point at Baiyappanahalli in the east (15.5 km) and up to Kengeri from the present terminating point at Mysore Road
Terminal near Nayandahalli in the west (6.5 km).
Also, it suggests that the network could be extended up to Bangalore International Exhibition Centre (BIEC) from Hesarghatta Cross (3.8 km) in the North and up to Anjanapura Township from Puttenahalli Cross on the South (6.3 km).
Besides, it recommends a new trunk line between Gottigere and Nagavara, passing through the Indian Institute of Management- Bangalore and Dairy Circle from where it goes underground via Hosur Road, Madiwala, Vellara Junction, Brigade Road, Cauvery Emporium Junction, Kamaraj Road, Cantonment Railway Station, Tannery Road and Outer Ring Road Junction.
The second new line will be constructed near RV Road Terminal at Jayanagar, which is part of North-South Corridor to Bommasandra Industrial Estate (18.8 km). The route will pass via BTM Layout, Central Silk Board Junction and Electronic City. The second phase will have 69 stations.
Delhi Metro Rail Corporation Limited, which has prepared a detailed project report (DPR) for Phase II, is said to have recommended that only government agencies carry out the project .
