Panel on technology for disabled

Bangalore, Jan 4, DHNS:

To spread awareness on the way technology is helping persons with disabilities to develop skills and work in IT and knowledge sector, the City-based Cheshire Disability Trust (CDT) has formed a committee of experts representing NGOs and the IT industry.

The Trust made the announcement on Tuesday, on the eve of Louis Braille’s 203rd birth anniversary - celebrated as Braille Day by several organisations.

“Despite the fact that persons with disabilities can use technology to equip themselves for jobs in IT and knowledge sectors, there is very little awareness on their ability to perform at work places,” S Anuradha Valluri, CDT’s Assistant Manager, told Deccan Herald.

“The committee has seven to eight committed full-time members who would help propagate use of access technology among persons with disabilities and spread awareness among employers,” she said.

The CDT would target nearly 100 companies and is also in talks with NASSCOM for reaching out to more employers.

“The committee will help employers make tools used at work place accessible for persons with disabilities.”

She said it would talk to 10 to 15 companies a month to spread awareness. “The effort would culminate in a job fair in February in which we would ask all the companies to participate and hire persons with disabilities,” she said.
