BBMP to adopt mechanised sweeping in core areas

Bangalore, Jan 4, DHNS:

The BBMP has called for five packages in the City for mechanised sweeping by using up-to-date technologies to sweep the arterial roads in the core area.

Officials claim that the technology of mechanised sweeping has been introduced to ensure that the cleaning of these arterial roads is thorough.

“We are looking at the mechanised sweeping technology for only the arterial roads which have heavy movement of citizens and vehicles. The mechanised sweeping will lessen the burden on the pourakarmikas,” said an official.

However, the heavy cost of these mechanised sweepers will burden the contractors, who might bid for these projects.

Pilot project
After their recent ‘success’  in a pilot project taken up on MG Road and Brigade Road to clear the debris accumulated on account of New Year revelry, the Palike has now decided to include this mechanised sweeping as a mandatory clause before awarding the contracts to interested parties.

The five packages once awarded for the mechanised sweeping will then be expanded in a phased manner to cover all the arterial roads in the City.

Officials claim that the pilot project of sweeping/sucking machines might, in fact, be included while awarding the garbage contracts for packages which include major arterial roads. However, the machines which cost Rs 10 lakh each may prove to be a heavy investment for the contractors.

The mechanised sweeping machine was hired by the BBMP in the 90s before discontinuing it on account of the outsourcing of garbage collection to contractors.
