Army chief’s official age to remain
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Wednesday held discussion with Defence Minister A K Antony apparently on the controversy surrounding the age of Army Chief V K Singh.
Singh and Antony met for about half an hour soon after a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Security.
There is speculation over the next move by the army chief after reports that the Defence Ministry decided to draw a line on the controversy by deciding that his date of birth was May 10, 1950, as against his contention that he was born on May 10, 1951.
However, informed sources denied the possibility of Gen Singh moving the Supreme Court, but may instead approach Armed Forces Tribunal.
Sources say the age row is settled and the army chief will retire in May this year. The exercise to choose General V K Singh's successor is also said to be underway with Lieutenant General Bikram Singh being the front runner.
