After four long years of continuous efforts, a group of scientists and scholars have developed a software that can translate Sanskrit texts into Hindi with complete accuracy.

Making the software capable of translating and interpreting even complex Sanskrit texts in other foreign and Indian languages is the next target of those involved in the project, funded by the Ministry of Information and Technology.

Kannada is one of the Indian languages that the software development team is now contemplating to introduce in a unique “machine translation system” to give Kannadiga an easy access to interpretation and understanding of Sanskrit texts and scriptures.

The ‘SanskritHindi MachineTranslation system', first ever developed in India, was launched on the first day of the week-long World Sanskrit Conference, inaugurated by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh here on Thursday.

The Sanskrit-Hindi translation software has simple tool for transliteration of Sanskrit into Hindi. It also has a morphological generator that extensively shows the ‘Subantas’ and ‘Tingantas’ (inflectional forms of a noun or a verb). It also handles derivational morphology showing ‘Kridanta’ and ‘Taddhita’ forms (primary and secondary affixes).

“Various possible Sabda-visleshanas of a Sanskrit word can be obtained from the Morphological Analyzer,” Dr K Varalakshmi of Sanskrit Academy, Hyderabad, told Deccan Herald.

The software, which has inbuilt Sanskrit-Hindi lexicons of Vaman Shivaram Apte and Moneir Williums, also provide a tool for splitting and joining of two different words of Sanskrit.
