‘Profit motive good for media’
Jagannath Institute of Management Science (JIMS) organised a media conclave on ''Media Content is Affected by Commercialisation'' on Saturday. The event was held at NCUI Auditorium, near Siri Fort.
The guest speakers at the event were Mr A Sridhar, director, Common Wealth Games; Mr Gurdeep Singh, business editor, United News of India; and Mr S B Jain, journalist, Punjab Kesari.
The participants concluded that commercialisation is the need of the hour. Since the readers and audience have plenty of options for content, they can choose which newspaper to read or channel to watch.
They added that when the media is blamed for excessive number of advertisements, it is forgotten increase in the commercials is coupled with the increase in number of pages of the newspapers and number of news channels. Thus, ultimately commercialisation does not impact editorial content that much.
Soumya, second year student, journalism, JIMS, said, “The discussion was quite interesting and informative. We got an opportunity to interact with eminent personalities of the media industry and collect first hand information about the issues discussed during the debate.”
According to the organisers the conclave was held in the context of loss of credibility of media, as editorial spaces are biased and media is ignoring its role of being an opinion maker.
The conclave aimed at analysing the role of commercialisation in the industry.
