Child workers give cops the slip

Last Updated 07 January 2012, 20:01 IST

Three child labourers, employed at a petrol bunk near Sunkadakatte, escaped from police custody on Saturday.

Girish Gowda, Bangalore district president of the National Human Rights Commission, said he had received a complaint 15 days ago that some boys were working at an Indian Oil petrol bunk in Gollarahatti on Magadi Road near Sunkadakatte. Gowda visited the bunk on Saturday at 7:30 am and saw the boys working there. He contacted the Social Welfare Department and the Children’s Helpline of the police department, but when no proper response was forthcoming, Gowda said he led a team and raided the bunk in the afternoon.

Two boys fled on seeing the NHRC activists. The Byadarahalli police rushed to the spot and took three other children into custody. When the police and the NHRC activists were discussing the matter with the bunk owner, the boys gave the police the slip, Gowda said.

Homemaker ends life

A 20-year-old married woman allegedly committed suicide on Wednesday by jumping into a well in the Electronics City police station limits. The death of Shashikala, 20, a resident of Chaudeshwari Layout, came to light on Saturday morning when passersby spotted the body floating in the well.

According to police, Shashikala, who worked at a garment factory, was married to her relative Ramachandra Naidu. On Wednesday, she left for work but did not return, police said.

The postmortem report confirmed it to be a case of suicide. The reason for Shashikala taking the extreme step was not known, police said.
