Cases against 6 suspected naxals, three others filed

Tirthahalli (Shimoga dist), Jan 8, DHNS:

The Agumbe police have registered cases against six suspected naxals and three unidentified people, in connection with the incident in which the police and the ultras exchanged fire near Barkana Falls at Mallandur near Agumbe on Friday.

The cases have been registered against Vikram Gowda, the head of the naxal group, B G Krishnamurthy, Mundagaru Latha, Mahesh, Srimathi and Shobha, besides three others - under the Indian Arms Act - the police said.

Fingerprint experts and the dog squad conducted an inspection at the spot of the incident at Barkana.

It was the first time that the Anti-Naxal Force encountered the naxals since the assassination of Sadashiva Gowda of Karkala. The ultras had fired at the personnel and fled. Police have heightened vigil at vantage points, including the roads in Agumbe area, following the incident at Barkana.
