Airport driver steals imported sunglasses
A 21-year-old man has been arrested in south-east Delhi with 75 imported sunglasses worth Rs 6 lakh, police said on Monday.
He had stolen the items over a period of time from the airport’s cargo bay.
Umesh Singh, a resident of Sultanpuri, was arrested at Sarai Kale Khan bus terminal.
“We got information that a young boy would come at the bus terminal with a huge quantity of stolen sunglasses in heavy quantity. Indeed, a youth turned up with a large box. We checked the contents and then arrested him,” said Ajay Chaudhry, Additional Commissioner of Police (South-East).
During interrogation, Umesh told police that he worked as a driver in a transport company at Mahipalpur.
“The vehicle was attached with the cargo terminal of Indira Gandhi International Airport. The accused used to load the goods from the terminal for delivery at a warehouse at Gurgaon,” Chaudhry said.
Singh said he used to steal three or four sunglasses from the boxes before delivering them. “He had been making a collection for the last two months and was going to his village to sell the items,” said Chaudhry. Further investigation is on.
DTC gets award
The Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) has been awarded for clocking the “Lowest Accident Rate Award” in the field of Urban Public Transport for 2010-11. The award was given by Association of State Road Transport Undertakings (ASRTU).
The DTC’s accident rate was 0.07 per lakh kilometre during 2010-11, which is the lowest rate of accidents as compared to other urban state transports in India.
The award was given by A K Upadhyay, president, ASRTU and Secretary, Ministry of Surface Transport, Government of India, in a function organised by ASRTU on the occasion of its 46th Annual General Body Meeting on Monday.
On behlf of the DTC, the award was received by J S Malhotra, Chief General Manager (Technical and Operation), DTC. A cash reward of Rs 50,000 and a trophy was presented to the recipient.
