Coach Heynckes impressed by Indians
The Indians might have been outclassed in the first half, but they certainly made an impression in the second , something which Bayern Munich coach Jupp Heynckes acknowledged.
The Indian team did not concede a goal in the second half during their 0-4 defeat to the German club in the exhibition contest. Heynckes said the Indians were clever in their defensive approach in the second session but said he was more than happy with his boys.
“The Indians were clever in their defensive approach and closed the gaps in the second half. Maybe we could have scored in the second half, but the boys had strenuous training in Qatar and were tired. I have absolutely no complaints,” he said.
Heynckes said the team enjoyed their outing in India. “We had good training in Qatar and a good 90 minutes here. It was nice to see such a passionate crowd turn up for the match. We came here with our best team and are well prepared for the Bundesliga,” he said.
The home team also came in for praise from key winger Arjen Robben, who said the Indians had made a good impression. “I think they were very good today, they had strength and speed and if given the right facilities, they can improve tactically and technically,” he said.
India coach Savio Medeira said his boys were overawed by the big names in the opposition during the first half. He said the match will give his team confidence ahead of the AFC Challenge Cup.
“The boys got a bit carried away in the first half. They were not communicating and pushing themselves. But the fresh legs in the second half were eager and did a lot better,” he said. “We played against one of the best teams, it is going to give our boys a lot of confidence.” Bhaichung Bhutia also lauded the team’s performance in the second half. “It was an honour playing against Bayern Munich. I enjoyed myself, I didn’t expect to last 86 minutes but I must congratulate the team for the commitment they showed in the second half,” he said.
“I feel Bayern is one of the best teams around and they can win the Champions League. Maybe this was not the right time to play them because of the kind of form they are in.”
Bhutia also thanked coach Medeira and his seniors whom he credited for extending his career to 16 years.
