Wild life staff trampled to death by elephant

Shillong, Jan 11, (PTI) :

A wild-life staff was trampled to death by a wild elephant in Meghalaya's Ri-Bhoi district, official sources said today.

"A young man lost his life when an elephant trampled the him last evening," District Deputy Commissioner Akash Deep told PTI.

A senior wild life official said, "The lone elephant had strayed from a herd which is located in Nongkhyllem Wild Life Sanctuary in the district."

The deceased, Marshal Kharsynteng, 24 was returning to the forest outpost when the elephant trampled him on the way, the official said.

Wild Life officials have remained vigil after the attack to protect villagers and their agricultural farms in case the herd attacks.

The official said they are trying to locate the strayed elephant, which attacked the staff last evening.

The body of Kharsynteng was taken to Civil Hospital at the district headquarter for post mortem.
