‘I still have to look hot’

Kavya Balaraman

Different Avatar

Sonam Kapoor’s taste in movies appears to be as diverse as the outfits she slips in and out of.

During her four-year stint in the industry, film buffs have witnessed her in a range of completely different avatars and she’s displayed a chameleon-like efficiency in adapting to the different roles she essays – be it the smitten Sakina in Saawariya, the obnoxious fashion-fanatic in Aisha or even the plain Jane Aayat in Mausum.

Whether this is a mere coincidence or a conscious attempt to steer clear of being stereotyped, it’s obvious that Sonam is aware of this quality. On a promotion spree for her latest film Players, she mentions that each of her films was, in a sense, a ‘first’ for her – her first romantic film and her first action thriller. “I’ve pretty much done only ‘firsts’, since I’ve just been around for four years. Each of my films has been different, which is great,” she says.

Her latest film, Players, has her playing the role of Naina, whom she somewhat confusingly describes as an ‘ethical computer-hacker’. Sonam elaborates, “My character is basically crazy about Abhishek Bachchan, and she does everything to get his attention in the movie.”

Apart from the fact that she’s new to this genre of movie and that she had a fantastic set of co-stars to work with, there’s another reason that Sonam enjoyed shooting for Players – after a string of roles sans make-up, it gave her an opportunity to pile on the glamour.

“I finally get to wear make-up in this movie – usually, everyone wants me to wear simple clothes and no make-up,” she says, referring to the toned down attire and barefaced look she sported in Mausam. “I really love working on my look, it’s a real passion of mine. My sister came up with my look in this movie; I told her I wanted to be very rock-and-roll and edgy – I don’t have Bipasha’s body, but I still have to look hot! The look was completely different from what I had in Mausam or in Aisha,” she adds.

The movie might have plenty of eye-catching stunts, but what really has eyebrows raising is Sonam’s defiant middle finger act in one scene. She maintains, however, that she didn’t really think twice about shooting it. “I didn’t really have to think about. It’s part of our language, as young people, isn’t it? I usually show it to a lot of boys back home,” she quips.
