EC tells Centre not to apply sub-quota

File PhotoAmid ongoing debate on providing reservation to minority communities in government jobs, the Election Commission has asked the Central government not to implement its decision to provide 4.5 percent sub-quota for minorities till Assembly elections get over in five states describing it as violation of Model Code of conduct.

In a statement released here in national capital, the poll panel said: “It has been brought to the notice of the Commission that the Central Government has carved out 4.5 percent sub-quota for minorities from within 27 percent quota for OBCs in violation of the Model Code of Conduct and should be stopped by the Commission.”

The Commission further directed the Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances & Pensions (Department of Personnel & Training) that “the Office Memorandum dated December 22, 2011, issued by them shall not be given effect to in the aforesaid five  poll going States viz. Goa, Manipur, Punjab, Uttarakhand and Uttar Pradesh, until the completion of the election process in these States”.
