300 Lambani tandas to be model villages

Gadag, Jan 11, DHNS:

As many as 300 Lambani tandas have been identified so far in the State to designate them as revenue villages.

Karnataka Tanda Development Corporation (KTDC) chairperson Basavaraja Naika told presspersons here on Wednesday that 4,000 tandas had been identified in the State till now and infrastructure was being developed in 2,300 such tandas.

The Corporation was the first of its kind in the country. Sufficient grants had been provided for KTDC in the last three budgets and the amount was Rs 40 crore in the budget for 2011-12, Naika said.

The government had been requested to provide Rs 160 crore in the forthcoming budget. A minimum grant of Rs 100 crore was expected, he said. Gadag district had received Rs 4.17 crore in the last three years for the development of tandas, he said.

There were as many as 10 crore Lambanis in the country and their number in the State was 45 lakh, Naika said. He demanded that tanda development corporations be set up in other states, too. A tanda development corporation should be set up at the Central level also, the chairperson said.

Community halls were being built for the Lambanis across the State. A community hall would come up in Gadag also, he said. Young men from the community will be provided training in driving, while young women in beauty parlour work. The training will start on January 15, Naika added.
