‘Ban construction of resorts on foothills of Chandradrona hill’

It will affect the sensitive environment, fear greens

Parisara mathu Vanya jeevi Samrakshana member G Veeresh said that if the resorts are allowed to come up in a private or government land in Western Ghats, then it will harm the sensitive environment of Chandradrona hilly ranges.

The district administration should not allow resorts to come up in Western Ghats.
Shola forest, grasslands are part and parcel of Chandradrona hill and is known for its fauna and flora. “Whether it is right to allow resorts to come up in the region.

We have already witnessed harmful affects of resorts in Ooty and Kodagu. Mushrooming of resorts also given rise to rift between humanbeings and elephants. In such a situation, the district administration should not allow resorts to come up in Western Ghats range,” he said.

“When hundreds of tourists stay in resorts, it will affect movement of wild animals in the region. There is religious beliefs attached to the hills. Mullayanagiri Mullappa Swamy peeta, Seethalayyagiri peeta, Bisnagipeeta, Narukanthe mutt, Deviramma betta, Gurudattatreya peeta, Anusooyadevi peeta, Pallaraswamy mutt, Kavikal mutt are situated on the top of the hillocks in the district. If resorts are allowed in these areas, then it will also affect the sactity of the region,” Veeresh said.

“If there was good rainfall in the hilly region, then farmers and coffee growers will get water throughout the year. Ayyanakere, Madagada Kere, Gowrihalla depend on the streams which originate in the hillocks. If resorts are constructed in the region, then all the water sources will be used by the resort owners,” he said.

A resort with 30 to 40 rooms are coming up in a private land adjacent to the Shola forest. Applications are pending before the district administration seeking permission for the construction of resorts in the region. Construction of resorts on the foothills of Chandradrona hill should be banned, he said in a memorandum to Deputy Commissioner.


Yuvashakthi Manavatha Vedike has urged the district administration to check the mushrooming of resorts, home stays in the district. The hilly ranges which attracts tourists should not be converted into a concrete jungle, said vedike president Satheesh.
