March 31 deadline for reservoir work

Chikkaballapur, Jan 16, DHNS:

Water connection: Speed up Jakkalamadagu project, says Suresh Kumar

Work on the Jakkalamadagu reservoir, which is meant to alleviate the water problems in the district, should complete by March 31, said Urban Development Minister Suresh Kumar.

Visiting the reservoir site on Monday to inspect the work, he said there would be no leeway for further delay in completion.

Officers and contractors provided him with information regarding the progress of the project.

Reminding them that the project should have been completed two years ago, Suresh Kumar said they had to focus on finishing off the work, ‘regardless of any hurdle’. “The work should complete in the next two months,” he added.

“The residents of the district can get water in June and July only if work on the reservoir is completed by March end. The drinking water problem too can be solved completely in phases,” the minister said.

Suresh Kumar visited the city and inspected the quality of work on underground drains also. He checked the work on on places like BB Road and M G Road and asked the contractors for information.

Expressing dissatisfaction about the quality of work in some of the places, Suresh Kumar criticised the contractors and officers for giving ‘useless work’. He instructed them to ensure there is no opportunity to undertake poor quality work.

K P Bachegowda, legislator, explained to the minister the problems faced by the citizens of the district. He said poor drainage facilities were adding to the woes of the people.

Chitravathi barrage work
Suresh Kumar also visited Paragodu and inspected the work on supplying water from the Chitravathi barrage to the rural areas on the outskirts of Bagepalli.

He checked the water level in the barrage at Paragodu on Monday. He also examined the functioning of the motors connected to the barrage to supply water to Gudibande and Bagepalli as well as the work being undertaken to provide water from the barrage to nearby rural areas in the near future.

The minister took the contractors to task, upset that the tender calling for contractors for the work had completed in December end but the work was progressing at a snail’s pace. The contractors assured Suresh Kumar that the work would complete by the next month.

The minister then visited Karakooru village and examined the cisterns being installed newly to supply drinking water.

Before inauguration
N Sampangi, legislator, who accompanied the minister during the inspection, said about 126 villages would get water from the Chitravathi barrage. He later said that Chief Minister Sadananda Gowda will inaugurate the drinking water supply system.

“In the backdrop of the inauguration, the Urban Development Minister is checking the level of water in the barrage as well as the quality of work on connections from the barrage,” said Sampangi.

Zilla Panchayat president M V Krishnappa, standing committee president Amaravathi, Town Municipal Council chief officer Sudhakar, president Sujathamma, vice-president Mohammad Zakir and others were present.

Meeting in Vidhana Soudha today
Urban Development Minister Suresh Kumar said a meeting of the Legislature on the Jakkalamadagu reservoir and underground drainage connection has been called on Tuesday. Legislators and other district-level officer from Chikkaballapur will participate in the meeting.

Decisions on the issues will be taken at the meeting, which will be executed, he added.
