Honour killing: Assns seek action
Progressive and women organisations take out jatha; demand CBI probe
Progressive organisations and women’s associations demanded the Abalavadi case to be handed over to the CBI and staged a protest in Mandya on Tuesday.
They took out a jatha and urged the district administration to take stern action on the accused in the Abalavadi case where a young girl was allegedly hanged to death by her parents. They also staged a show of strength in front of the SP’s office.
Spandana, Vimochana women’s organisations and many other such associations joined hands and took out a jatha on the main streets of Mandya and culminated at the deputy commissioner’s office and submitted a memorandum.
They condemned the police’s inaction even though the incident of Suvarna’s death came to their notice earlier. Now, even after the incident has taken a serious turn, the police are maintaining silence which has led to suspicion, they alleged.
The general opinion of the people is the police has been trying to close the case and hence the case has to be handed over to the CBI probe, they demanded.
They said that it is the government’s responsibility to curb atrocities on women like dowry harassment, murder and acid attack, which are on the rise.
The agitators also demanded suspension of the officials who showed negligence towards the issue and also sought suitable protection to the affected dalit family.
The woman attempting inter-caste marriage was the reason behind the murder, they said and condemned the accused for assaulting the youth’s family. They urged the Human Rights Commission, State Women’s Commission and district administration to intervene and take suitable action.
Sunanda Jayaram, Nirmala Chikkegowda, Krishnaprasad of Janshakti organisation, Lakshman, Geetanjali, Sowmya and others participated in the protest.
