BWSSB drive against unauthorised connections
The Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board will launch a drive on January 20 against unauthorised water connections in the City.
The drive, expected to last for months, will focus on areas which face acute water scarcity.
The violators will have to cough up a hefty penalty - double the normal water consumption charges - with 12 per cent tax on the fine, said T Venkataraju, Engineer-in-chief, BWSSB.
The engineer said water theft and unauthorised connections were rampant in slums and even posh areas of the City. The proposed drive comes in the wake of five instances of such connections detected during a routine inspection in Kathriguppe and Hosakerehalli extensions.
Beneath stormwater drain
He said the drive was a difficult task as pipelines would be concealed in all possible ways. “Recently, we found an unauthorised water connection underneath the stormwater drain for over two kilometre. The incident came to light only when the consumer received contaminated water. It is very difficult to identify such connections,” he added.
