Exploring emerging trends in education
The dynamics of ‘change’ due to advances in the digitalised world has affected educational choices, career choices, work culture and life styles. One of the basic functions of the family is to prepare secure individuals for life, and the basic function of society is to contribute to the nation.
The only vehicle to bring about growth and development along with change is education, be it formal or informal, basic or adult education, early childhood education or pre-primary education or higher education.
Today care-takers ‘invest’ in education for a better quality of life and for the development of healthy personalities.
Thanks to technology, the world is, today, a global village with cross-cultural, multi-cultural and multi-lingual influences and expectations. Educational methodologies have also taken up various approaches like play-way, Montessori, heuristic, holistic etc. Hence, we see a mushrooming of educational centres, where conventional methods have been modified, contemporised, customised to suit the needs of a multi-dimensional child.
Educationists, parents, teachers, other caretakers, human developmentalists, research scholars, authors and publishers of books, manufacturers of educational toys and teaching-learning materials, academicians, psychologists, psychiatrists, teacher trainees and students, all need to focus on an education methodology that is in the best interest of the child.
The Indian Montessori Centre, Bangalore and the Department of Human Development, Mount Carmel College, (Autonomous) Bangalore, whose curriculum centres around the child, have made concerted efforts to provide a common platform, wherein such modern trends can be reviewed and discussed. Deccan Herald is the print media partner in this effort. Through this conference, the organisers feel there will be an impetus and direction to people who are involved in education and particularly, the education of children in their formative years. Thus the collaborative organisation of Maîtri 2012 to bring together minds in the improvement of the lives of children.
Maîtri 2012, an international, research-interactive will introspect the developmental needs and a better understanding of trends in education. This interactive will throw light on issues of ‘what to expect’, ‘where to focus’ and ‘when to act’ for the education-seeker as well as the education-provider in the global scenario.
The Indian Montessori Centre is also conducting this conference in Chennai and Mumbai. The Lillards will be addressing education enthusiasts in all three cities.
Dr Angeline S Lillard, Professor, Department of Psychology, University of Virginia, USA, is the author of the book ‘The Science Behind The Genius’. The book is the result of extensive research of various educationists. She has the credit of being a recipient of several awards and honours in USA. She visits Japan in an advisory capacity to the Psychology Society. Paula Lillard is an authority on Montessori education and has written four books on its theory and practice. She has to her credit several articles on education.
To provide an Indian oriental flavour to the occidental thoughts, Meenakshi Sivaramakrishnan will spotlight on the parallelism in Montessori method and the ancient Indian thought. She is a well-known figure in the field of child education.
The conference will be held at the Mount Carmel College campus, Diamond Jubilee Auditorium, 58, Palace Road, Vasanthnagar, Bangalore on January 28, 2012 between 10 am and 5 pm. On-the-spot registration is at 9 am at the venue.
