Hunger strike over campus election: JNU
The students of the Left parties in Jawahar Lal Nehru University (JNU) have decided to sit on an indefinite hunger strike starting from Thursday night over administration’s denial to start the much-awaited election procedure.
Parties like Student's Federation of India (SFI), All India Student's Federation (AISF) and All India Student's Association (AISA) have started campaigning and mobilising the students for elections. They are also seeking students’support for the hunger strike.
“It is very unfortunate that in discussion with the Joint Struggle Committee (JSC) representatives, the administration refused to give any commitment on the constitution of the Grievance Redressal Committee (GRC), after which the election process can be initiated,” said Roshan Kishore, a member of SFI.
GRC Delay
The selection procedure and forming of the GRC which constitutes dean of students, two faculty members and two students is the responsibility of the administration.
“We have been asking the VC to form GRC so that any formal notification of elections could be issued but they are delaying it,” said Shruti, member, AISA.
According to party members, the administration further hinted at changing university's election model to that of Delhi University's model which would mean a rejection of the Election Committee’s (EC) role in conducting elections. JNU elections are famous for its students playing an active role in them.
