What is it about women that attracts them to high heels? Mala Ashok busts a few myths surrounding the quintessential six-incher!
High heels, both platforms and stilettos, have always been hailed as high fashion. Unfortunately, this item of haute couture is believed to come with a price. Almost everyone who wears high heels expects to experience some degree of pain in different parts of their anatomy.
Now there is new evidence to suggest that not all high heels are created equal. In some cases, high heels can be healthier for your feet than flat shoes or chappals.
There is a condition known as Excess Pronation, which affects almost 75 per cent of the population. This condition is related to various causes such as heel pain, knee pain, and back pain.
A noted podiatrist (foot specialist,) Phillip Vasyli, recommends wearing shoes with a slight heel rather than our trusty flats in these cases.
Vasyli believes that far from preventing the above-mentioned aches and pains, flat shoes tend to cause or aggravate them. This is because of a lack of overall support and flimsy shoe construction.
This, however, does not give us license to emulate Lady Gaga and go in for towering heels. Rather, when you are shopping for stilettos ensure that the heels are of moderate proportions. If you crave the extra tall, towering look wear the Lady Gaga shoes on occasions where you’ll be sitting for most of the evening for example at a formal dinner party.
It is important to opt for well-constructed, “quality shoes,” such as those that have shock absorbing materials in the ball of the feet. Wear your highest heels for short periods of time and rest them in the closet periodically.
If you want to wear heels daily to work, do what New Yorkers do – travel to work in sensible shoes or even sneakers, and don your heels once you are at work where you are likely to sit at your desk for a good part of the day.
Tips
The comfort of your shoe is based on how well it fits your foot. While selecting high-heel shoes, be conscious of the weight being distributed on the ball of your foot. Look for shoes that contour to your arch and distribute your weight over the entire foot, not just the ball of the foot.
Thus, following a few simple rules will promote high heels from definite no-no to a comfortable fashion alternative. You may even go to your next ball in heels, and unlike Cinderella, you could dance the night away and not have to leave at the stroke of midnight!
