North-Indian Flavours
The closure of HAL Airport did not bring life to an end on the Old Airport Road. It continues to remain the lifeline it once was with its many landmarks and businesses.
'Foodtime', an eatery located on Old Airport Road, and started by a businessman from Rajasthan offers authentic North Indian food at a reasonable price. In addition to 10 or more varieties of parathas, the place also has meals, complete with two phulkas, dal, two sabjis and rice. The combo meals, which are slightly more expensive, has an additional aloo paratha as an incentive. The owner, Sunil Jain, says that the parathas are quite popular with the regulars, who are youngsters from the IT companies, located near the eatery.
Sunil had a furniture shop on the same road but could never find a descent enough place to hop in for a quick bite. He had to either drive or take an auto to find some clean and good place. It was this experience that inspired him to start ‘Foodtime.’
“You will always get food at my joint. We have no fixed time. We open shop at eight in the morning and have people streaming in for breakfast. Sometimes, we find the same faces return for lunch. We try to understand the requirements of our regular customers and cater to them. This has helped us grow,” explains Sunil.
In addition to a very enticing menu with its long list of parathas, short eats and innovative juices, what also strikes you is the dust from the road, thanks to the never-ending construction work. One can’t help but probe as to what he does to make sure that the food is clean.
Sunil is quite aware of the problem and has therefore covered the cooking place with glass to prevent dust. And no cooking is done on the ground floor. “All the food is cooked on the first floor where we have our kitchen. I don’t compromise on cleanliness. The food is cooked only when an order is placed and even vegetables like onions and tomatoes are never cut and stored. It is all cut then and there. This is to ensure that nothing is preserved for a long time and then used,” informs Sunil.
Sunil’s cooks have been brought in from Rajasthan to ensure that the authentic North Indian flavour is retained. His menu comprises parathas that comes in different varieties such as gobi, paneer, aloo, to mention a few. It is served either with curd or pudina chutney. There are also a line of chaats such as sev puri, dahi puri, bhel puri, dahi papadi chaat in addition to pav bhaji, samosa and chola batura.
The regulars vouch for taste and hygiene. Chandra Kumar, an IT professional, says, “the food is always served hot and the place is jam-packed at lunch. So I always make sure I am well in time to get a seat. For the food they serve, the prices are reasonable.” ‘Foodtime’ is located right beside the ‘Diamond District’ and is open till 11 pm.
