Rs 4,000 MSP fixed for tur
The State government on Saturday announced minimum support price (MSP) of Rs 4,000 per quintal of tur, the price of which has crashed in the last few days.
Disclosing this to reporters, Agriculture Minister Umesh Katti said over and above Rs 3,700 provided by the Centre, the State has decided to extend Rs 300 per quintal as an incentive. Procurement will begin on Monday in tur growing districts of Gulbarga, Yadgir, Bidar and parts of Raichur, and it will be done for two months, he added.
The State is expecting 3.38 lakh tonnes of tur production this year. Prices in the market have crashed with the beginning of the harvest season. Similarly, the government has offered different MSP rates for paddy, depending upon the grade.
The government recently completed the procurement process of onion. About 3.79 lakh quintal of onion has been procured from the farmers at the cost of Rs 25.54 crore. Directions have been issued to officials to sell onion by this month end and try to recover the cost of procurement, the Minister said and added that the government is expecting to incur about 50 per cent loss for having procured onion.
Katti said despite severe drought in 99 taluks, the State's food grain production in the current year is expected to be about 1.25 lakh tonne. Last year, the State had grown 1.40 lakh tonnes of food grains.
